Top Kitchen and Bath Trends in 2011

The NKBA (National & Association) recently identified the following top moving forward through 2011. If you are remodeling your kitchen or bathroom it would serve you well to incorporate some of the latest in design into your project.

  1. Concealed Kitchens: Integration, kitchens are being incorporated into the homes main living areas and entertainment rooms
  2. Beverage Stations: These spaces can include under counter refrigeration, wine coolers, and coffee makers. They may also have a small bar area included. are used to store types of coffee, tea, stemware, cups, silverware and other utensils.
  3. Scaling of Elements: Shapes and textures are being used to create scale in the overall composition of Kitchens and Bath. A pebbled wall, marbled surfaces in glass tile, metallic material, or symmetrically hung pendant lights direct the eye and balance the space.
  4. Space Subtleties: Kitchen and Bath fixtures are changing from what were confined shapes and spaces. Free floating vanities, wall mounted toilets, stacked or under counter appliances in islands.
  5. Design Framing:  Kitchen and Bath designers and creating frames to highlight elements of a space, such as a soffit along the ceiling or the width of a wall space surrounding inset cabinetry.
  6. Varying Heights: Island tops and countertops and partial walls are being customized in height for the task the homeowner performs in that area. This not only provides function but can balance the space. This can be done in bathrooms also.
  7. Energetic Colors: A bold palette of colors brings life not only to the walls but also lighting, countertops and wood tones.
  8. Soft Geometry:  Rounded shapes are being showcased in countertop edges, arches over doorways and cook tops, lighting, soffits and islands,
  9. Japanese Influences: Often relying on one strong anchor piece of Japanese origin, baths are being designed to incorporate Japanese design and traditional qualities of eastern culture
  10. Art Integration: Maximizing personalization in the kitchen and bath, homeowners are introducing beloved pieces of art, from paintings to sculptures and unique light fixtures, as the central design element to build the space around.

After reviewing the latest trends your task is to incorporate the ones that work well with the general style of your home, not to incorporate all of them. One way to do that is to hire an experienced interior designer, which can be different from an interior decorator. A decorator is a person skilled at offering color options, window and furnishing type of advice. A designer will be adept at the previous with the added benefit of working with the actual floor-plan and function of the new space.

When hiring any professional, you want to make sure they stay current on the latest products and trends. Do your research and ask the key questions of the potential designers to gauge their knowledge, so your finished project is all it can be.
